How to open HEIC format images in Windows PC

How to open HEIC format images on a Windows Computer

1. Download XNView (image viewer)
I prefer not install a new soft ware on my system unless it's really necessary. XNView has a portable version available. Link: Portable XNView

2. Download the XNView HEIF Plugin
Download the XNView HEIC Plug-in (the X32 version works on X64 systems), and extract the contents into the Plugin folder (\XnViewPortable\App\XnView\Plugins). You might have to enable under Tools>Option>General>Display all image file types to make this plugin work.

3. Associate the HEIC format with XNView
In order for you to directly open the HEIC format images by double-clicking on them, you need to associate the HEIC format with XNView. Find a HEIC file > Open with.. > on the next dialog, Choose XNView and make sure you check the box the says "always this app to open HEIC files". If XNView is not listed as one of the apps (likely, if you installed a portable version in #1), scroll down to the bottom of the list and click "more apps" and then "look for another app on this PC". Point to the location where you extracted XNView Portable and point to "XnViewPortable.exe"

Enjoy not having to convert all your HEIC photos and view them on your PC using XNView. Maybe native support for HEIC is coming for Windows in the future, but this is one of the best things you can do right now while waiting for that to happen
